Where were the guys? Juni and Quincey had wrapped up the website and created a Facebook business page along with an ad account. They’d stirred the chili and set the table and now sat in the living room where Quincey told Juni all about her business classes in college and what she hoped to do in the future.

It wasn’t that Juni wasn’t interested. She was. But the hour had come and gone, and this wasn’t the way she’d envisioned the day going.

It’s not all about you, Juni.

She knew that. She knew that she was only responsible for herself, while Zadok was basically a single parent to two teenagers. His responsibilities might ease in a couple of years, but they would never end.

Arleigh was taking on two little boys. That was a big job, too, but she’d been their nanny before she began dating their dad. It was different for Juni. The kids were older, and they weren’t technically Zadok’s.

The truck grumbled into the drive. The garage door rattled as it lifted, and the truck disappeared into its nether reaches.

Now that Zadok had returned, she could breathe. Which was a little crazy, because only 24 hours ago she still hated his guts. Or, at least, had been determined to keep him at a distance.

The door from the garage opened, and a moment later Xavier shot down the basement stairs while Zadok came into the living room. He gave her that lopsided grin she’d come to love — no, like, or at least appreciate — but there was sadness in his eyes.

“Sorry we’re a little late. We had a close encounter with a whitetail buck, but Xav didn’t hit it, so all is well.”

Juni grimaced. “They’re everywhere these days, especially at dusk. Don’t they know it’s hunting season?”

“Apparently not.” Zadok glanced toward the stairwell and shook his head slightly. “I’ll get the cornbread in the oven. That qualifies as our sandwich for tonight.”

“You’re playing fast and loose with the rules.” Quincey bounded to her feet. “I’ll fix a salad.”

“When is a better night for chili and cornbread?” Zadok jostled his sister lightly as they headed through the entrance into the kitchen. “Your system doesn’t allow a lot of leeway.”

“Maybe Saturday should be Zadok Day,” she mumbled.

“Fine by me.” He grinned at Juni, who’d followed them. “Did you hear that? I have a day named after me.”

“I have an entire month.”

He laughed. “So you do.”

Quincey opened the fridge and pulled out a bag of greens, but Juni stepped around her as though magnetically drawn to the tall man over by the stove.

Zadok searched her face. “Did you miss me?” he asked quietly.

“To my utter shock and astonishment.”

He chuckled and caught her hand for a brief moment. “I’ll take that answer. I’m still a little amazed myself.”

“That cornbread isn’t making itself,” Quincey muttered.

“She’s a hard taskmaster,” he said to Juni.

She laughed. “I know it. Here, let me help you. Where’s the recipe? Or is it a box mix?”

“As if.” He chuckled as he pointed at a photo-album style recipe book lying on the counter.
